Forty Days to November:
Day 15 - 1492 Edition

It's Columbus Day! Called and guided by God, where this 15th century explorer called Cristoforo Colombo, and others like him, landed eventually eradicated human sacrifice in the entire Western Hemisphere

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was an Italian navigator and explorer whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean ushered in the first period of sustained contact between Europe and the Americas.  When he sailed from Spain in 1492, his motives may have been many - to tap into the wealth of the Orient, to weaken the powerful Ottoman Turks (read: Caliphate), and defin," was definitely to serve his Lord.

A devout Christian, Columbus felt his name - Christopher - which means "Christ-bearer," was evidence of his destiny.  He thought that he found assurance in the Scriptures for a call to sail the globe with the Christian message. Psalm 107:23-24, for instance, promises that "those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters, they see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep."

Describing his motive, Columbus stated:
"With a hand that could be felt, the Lord opened my mind to the fact that it would be possible...and He opened my will to desire to accomplish that project...The Lord purposed that there should be something miraculous in this matter of the voyage to the Indies."

Pulitzer-Prize winning Columbus biographer Samuel Eliot Morison, himself a naval officer, in 1943 wrote, "This conviction that God destined him to be an instrument for spreading the faith was far more potent than the desire to win glory, wealth, worldly honors, to which he was certainly far from indifferent."

Words that resonate, do they not?

Patriot's Prayer: Dear Lord, I plead that You guide me, guide my country, guide those who love Your gift that is America, just as you guided Columbus. We may not know exactly where we land, but when we do, surely Your work will be always miraculous.

Patriot's Promise: "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. And though he fall, he sahll not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him wih His hand." ~Psalm 37:23

His three ships can be seen in the backgroud.
Remember the names of the ships? :)
