Forty Days to November:
Day 14 - The Last Best Hope of Man

On January 25, 1974, Ronald Reagan gave his famous "Shining City Upon A Hill" speech, and concluded by saying:

We cannot escape our destiny, nor should we try to do so. The leadership of the free world was thrust upon us two centuries ago in that little hall in Philadelphia.  In the days following World War II, when the economic strength and power of America was all that stood between the world and the return to the dark ages, Pope Pius XII said, 'The American People have a great genius for splendid and unselfish actions.' Into the hands of America, God has placed the destinies of an afflicted mankind."

A City upon a Hill is a phrase from the parable of Salt and Light in Christ's Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 5:14, Jesus tells his listeners, "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden."

John Winthrop (1587 - 1649), one of the leading figures in the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, used the terminology in his 1630 thesis written when aboard the ship Arabella. Read it in its entirity here.  It is an amazing piece of history.
John Winthrop
"For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world. We shall open the mouths of enemies to speak evil of the ways of God, and all professors for God's sake."

Patriot's Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to be true to You and Your principles and live a life of integrity, free of hypocrisy and untruth.  Give us strong minds, great hearts, true faith, and ready hands to do your work. Trruly You, Lord, make us shine.

Patriot's Promise: To every thing there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven. ~Ecclesiastes 3:1.
