Forty Days to November
Day 9 - The Birth of the Navy

The Barbary Pirates had been operating since the time of the Crusades. These were Muslim pirates that raided European coastal towns up until the early 19th century. It is estimated that up to 1.5 million Europeans were captured and put into slavery from the 16th to the 19th century. France, England and Spain each lost thousands of ships, and almost all of Spain's and Italy's "Barbary" coasts were abandoned due to the dangerous Barbary pirates.

USS Enterprise defeates Tripoli, Libya
In 1783, America won its first freedom from the British monarchy; and in 1784, Morrocan pirates seized their first US ship.  Algeria seized two more in 1785.And the Libyan governement was quite hostile to American ships.  An ambassador to Britain explained why:
"It is written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise."

The newly United States chose to fight the pirates of Barbary and the US Navy was born in March of 1794. Six firgates were authoried, and this new military presence helped lead to the two Barbary Wars (1801-1805 & 1815). The tiny US Navy broke a ring of international terrorism that had been in operation for the past 150 years.
