The US Constitution & the New Counterculture

Depending on your sources and research, the term "counterculture" can take on different meanings. Counterculture broken down into the Latin root words occorro (oppose, work against) humanitas (culture, refinement). The Miriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines counterculture as "a culture with values and mores that run counter to those of established society." The terminology made it's dictionary-debut in 1968. Inevitably, with that date images of Woodstock and anti-war protestors come to mind. Wikipedia defines it as "a sociological term used to describe the values and norms of behavior of a cultural group, or subculture, that run counter (or as an alternative) to those of the mainstream society; the cultural equivalent of political opposition. It is a neologism attributed to Theodore Roszak, author of the book The Making of a Counter Culture. When the book was published, it brought about a collective conscience of people who became motivated to protest the Vietnam war after the Civil Rights Movement began to take hold in society through legitimate reform.

Countercultural undercurrents have existed in many societies through the ages simply because human nature drives us to define what is "normal," Being human, we compare "normal" to what seems odd and abnormal and to those who stick out and draw attention. The term "counter culture" when it refers to a largely visible phenomenon that reaches a moment of truth and then persists becomes itself a movement that "expresses the ethos, aspirations, and dreams of a specific population during an era — a social manifestation of zeitgeist." The life form the counter culture ultimately takes on becomes revolution (from the Latin revolutio, meaning "a turn-around") when oppression en mass is no longer tolerated.

I have been riveted and heartbroken by what is happening in Iran, clearly a countercultural movement by people wanting freedom after decades of oppression in one form or another. The dissenting voices didn't happen overnight. So an enormous majority rose up, counter to the mainstream, to state their case. An optimistic, if not premature, name has even been given already to the freedom-seekers. A movement appeared among the incessant violence on the masses of Iranian protesters in that country, and they name it The Green Revolution. While I am hopeful and prayerful for them for an outcome that gives freedom, it is clearly too early to tell what the Green Revolution's outcome will be. But now named, the counterculture has permanence.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there is a growing new counterculture movement right here in the United States. The United States Federal Government in recent months has taken almost unprecedented over-reaching powers. The Contstitutional violations are so frequent and insideous that trying to digest it all is overwhelming at times. American Conservatives have literally started to feel like they are in the battle of their lives in attempting to restore Constitutional integrity to this country. Case in point: The recent passing of the Waxman-Markey "Cap & Trade" legislation by the House of Representatives. Some of us spent days and days alerting people to call their representatives, encourage a "NO" vote, and then calling representatives ourselves (even ones NOT our own!) on the most massive piece of legislation in history. After it passed by a narrow margin by clearly misguided and mislabeled (RINOS) Republicans, I know I felt exhausted.

There is an broadening warlike sentiment happening in this country, felt largely by conservatives, but increasingly by liberals too. Ideological battles are being fought against a government that largely ignores us and/or does not represent us as it should. This government has on its side a "mainstream" media as a mouthpiece for its policies, policies it assumes are not opposed in a majority consensus. The government treats their perceived majority population as and agreeable mainstream as well. They think we either agree don't care (or they think we are stupid). But a large number of us are not this agreeable mainstream. For now our only visible collective outlet has been the Tea Partiesthat have been happening around the country. But the growing chatter on Facebook and Twitter, among many other social networks, is getting louder.Grassroots organizations are growing exponentially as individuals are nearing their own personal tipping point, if they haven't already. We all together are headed for that "moment of truth." People are waking up: the "social manifestation" is happening. The so-called "Silent Majority" who want to live their lives based on a Constitution that put limits on their federal government are not so silent anymore. We are now running "counter to those of the mainstream society." We have silently become The New Counterculture.

What name will we give our revolution?

What Does Freedom LOOK Like?

free⋅dom  /ˈfridəm/ [free-duhm] –noun
1.the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint: He won his freedom after a retrial.
2.exemption from external control, interference, regulation, etc.
3.the power to determine action without restraint.
4.political or national independence.
5.personal liberty, as opposed to bondage or slavery: a slave who bought his freedom.

As an American increasingly concerned with our eroding liberties and almost complete abandonment by the federal government in following our Constitution, the word "freedom" admittedly has taken on strong meaning to me, and I have taken pride in feeling like I'm fighting for it for my kids' future. However, at this moment images like this one coming out of Iran have, if I am understanding their plight, utterly humbled me to say the least.

I don't pretend to know the depth of the dominating theocratic regime that Iran's government is, nor could I relate to their oppression or suffering on such a scale. For days I have watched their rising numbers in images on TehranLive.org with some reservations. Not because I thought they may fail in their revolution-attempt, but because I kept thinking "We mustn't forget about Israel." We cannot forget about Israel or that our president seems beyond aloof about the country. I was reticent to join in on feeling anything about what was happening in Iran.

But as I watched this slide show, I couldn't help but get caught up in what I was witnessing. THESE people are crying out for FREEDOM, are they not? In a simplistic explanation to myself, it appears the Iranian voters really weren't given a choice in candidates as they were hand-picked by the "Supreme Leader". Had the Iranian voters been given an inkling of the hope of choice that really wasn't a choice? And when the results of their election seemed so insultingly fraudulent their hope in having a choice was snatched away? So the people take to the streets risking life and limb numbering in the tens of thousands for days and days!

The pictures speak volumes. I am both humbled and motivated by what the demonstrators are doing in Iran, all for the feeling of freedom. And I pray they gain the outcome they want, believing that what they want is their God-given right to freedom.

Political Breath-Taking

I don't know about you but I can hardly catch my breath anymore with all that is coming down the pipe lately concerning political "change." It's breath-taking, is it not? By now you probably have already either heard of or read the blog article from Mat Rodina, which was reprinted in Pravda.ru, the online English language Russian Journal.Amazingly, someone just emailed it to me today - it's old news at this point. In this April 2009 post called "American Capitalism Gone with a Whimper", the author states, "It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed." Well I definitely feel out of breath.

Trying to keep up with constant changes in legislation and policy (some of which is done stealthily, you discover-after-the fact) of this over-reaching federal government, let alone trying to figure out the truth behind it all, has me in my best mental running shoes at all times. Part of my sluggishness in posting here recently is because I'm politically exhausted. I have had to learn to put certain filters on: What affects me personally? My family? My children's future? So, for this posting, I'll start with the first filter-question. Yesterday, I came across this article from Time Magazine Online: "Attorney General Urges New Hate-Crime Law" That headline isn't really new news to most of us, but this particular line caught my eye:"We will not tolerate murder, or the threat of violence, masquerading as political activism," Holder said.

[Holder's statement made me think of my previous blog post regarding someone freaking out about the idea that anyone could connect supposed Right-Wing-Extremists to Al-Qaeda. What used to be thought of as conspiracy theories - they don't seem so conspiratorial anymore, do they?]

While jokingly, it's fun to call myself a "RWE", but in reality of course I'm not. I have however, become politically active: a political activist so to speak. I, too, have participated in a "Tea Party" named of course in honor of the event that helped start the American Revolution for independence from England.
Protests that are covered by the media, and not favorably I might add. One recent post-event blog referred to the protesters as "hardcore." Whatever "hardcore" means, it has implications that aren't accurate but could promote future abuse. Connect the dots with me: protesters...hardcore...masquerading as political activists...hate crimes...criminal. Never before has it been more important to know your First Amendment Constitutional Right to peaceably assemble. What's coming next? Watch for the redefinition of "peaceable."

Where might we see clues to what's coming? How do we avoid any trappings of "old news"? As sides increasingly become obvious as to whom will chose where they will run to, you have to get creative in your news sources. I recommend putting on those filters as I have. As you do, read sites like Pravda.ru where there are headlines like this one you won't see in our newly-crowned state-run television program, ABC Nightly News or the other in-the-tank main stream media outlets; and read the Mat Rodina Blog as it's published rather than months down the road when old news might really hurt you or someone else.

Freedom is getting the wind knocked out of her right now, but FREEDOM ultimately reigns, not politicians. Just keep yourself well-educated while fighting to breathe.

Don't forget: I am happy to send you a FREE NCCS Pocket Constitution if you visibly follow my blog either from Google, Facebook or Blogfeed. Just email me at conservative_mom@yahoo.com and let me know. Thank you!

The 5,000 Year Leap - A Short Book Report

How well do you know our Founding Fathers? The Declaration of Independence or the U.S. Constitution? What was so special about it all?

One of my ultimate reading recommendations for every American is a book called The 5,000 Year Leap: A Miracle that Changed the World by Cleon Skousen. I read this book a year ago this summer. After reading just the first few pages, and after closing my dropped jaw, I was awestruck. This book isn't just for Conservatives; I believe it is for Liberals too - Liberals in the classic sense anyway.

Here's just a few quick highlights from the Intro:

"...Unfortunately, every new generation of human beings seems to feel the instinctive and passionate necessity to reinvent the sociological wheel...."
"...What human beings are really seeking is individual happiness, self-realization...."

"The 28 Great Ideas that Are Changing the World
There was hardly a single idea which the American Founding Fathers put into their formula that someone hadn't thought of before. However, the singularity of it all was the fact that in 1787, when the Constitution was being written, none of those ideas was being substantially practiced anywhere in the world. It was in America that produced the dynamic success formula which proved such a sensational blessing to modern man."

"...Our purpose [for writing the book] is to present the Founders' 28 great ideas in their original simplicity and mostly in their own words. After all it is their story. They are the ones who made the 5,000-year leap possible."

Reading the book doesn't have to be for just the proverbial preached-to choir. Get a copy and give it to someone who isn't plugged in, someone who doesn't even watch the news, or someone who thinks that they can't do anything to change what's happening the our great country.

The Cairo Diatribe

Yesterday after our dear leader gave his "I have a dream for Muslims" speech, the Blog world was not surprisingly flying with opinion, rhetoric, and the ridiculous. One blog forwarded to me stood out though, and I had to reply. More on that in a moment.

Briefly, my reaction to the dear leader BHO's (dlBHO) Cairo diatribe comes more in the form of questions than anything. The biggest question I have for the dear leader is: What have you done with Israel? Then, what history do you know of the region? What resources do you use when thinking of the different sects of Islam? Sunni? Shi'a? Sufi? Wahabe? Which one do you ascribe to, dear leader? Do you recognize the schisms in Islam? Al- Qaeda, who identify themselves to Sunnis, is not representative of the "religion of peace" but what other groups also are not representative of it? In my humble opinion, and I have studied Islam in order to not be labeled prejudiced, the Sufi sect of Islam is the most peaceful. 'Nuff said.

Back to the Blog realm's reactions. One particular blog pinpointed a well-known cable news television host and radio talk show personality as creating the notion that al-Qaeda was looking to join up with American right-wing extremists to cause violence and harm. The blog piece was accompanied with a convenient three-minute video clip of the show attempting to illustrate this point. But the blogger missed his mark, and this got me to thinking in terms of the age-old idiom about not "seeing the forest for the trees."

By the way, did you recognize Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals" being applied in the Cairo pseudo-vituperation?

Based on the DHS report this blogger quoted, I was definitely in agreement with the author about the Federal Government taking steps toward severe political repression. As an accidental activist myself feeling tremendously disenfranchised, I'm certain that I'm on somebody's RWE list, if for no other reason, because I am currently flying a Gadsden Flag outside my home.

So, after having read the article, in addition to some inaccuracies (of which I will leave out details***) regarding the video piece, I replied to the blogger that he missed the mark.

It was pointed out that the TV commentator stated that if we've been watching his show for a while that he "has been warning of just such a thing for a long time." The author then stated, appropriately in my opinion, "The idea of white supremacists teaming up with al-Qaeda is so bizarre and so unlikely that anyone with half a brain knows that such a thing would never happen."

But we're not dealing with half-brained people. In terms of our tyrannical Federal Government, we are dealing with the warped-brained people who clearly ascribe to Rules for Radicals. These are people who put out that DHS report. These are the people who have turned MSNBC, NBC, and Newsweek Magazine into State-run media. With Alinsky's rules in mind, it should not alarm us so much that the DHS put out this report either. What should have alarmed us about the report was the motive behind putting it out. It was a huge step toward identifying and marginalizing the enemy (Rule #13).

So the mark that was missed, the proverbial forest, if you will, is in recognizing the following: 1)the federal government is going to turn people who are fighting for liberty and all the other RWEs on their list into the enemies of their "democracy"; and, 2)the people in Al-Qaeda and in other Islamist groups are professional terrorists: do not think it has not occurred to them to isolate a certain portion of our population and use them to achieve their agenda. (By the way, that is the complete essence of the Palestinian plight.) So yes, it is bizzare that those of us whom DHS has labeled as right-wing extremists would pair up with Islamist terrorists. But in the minds of the terrorists it is not bizzare. Nor is it bizarre for the many, many Alinsky-subscribers in our US government.

The Progressivist operatives of the US Government would be only too happy to align us "RWEs" with al-Qaeda operatives. Wouldn't that be convenient? All the descriptions listed in DHS report might be difficult to prove in a law-abiding federal court; but now that dear leader BHO (speech in Cairo 6.4.2009) has publicly demonized Al-Qaeda to the whole world, we have an enemy with a face. Couple Obama's speech with our oh-so-brave attorney general Eric Holder's statement yesterday about how the Justice Department is "committed to using criminal and civil rights laws to protect Muslim Americans." Finally, pair-up that world reknown enemy with the increasingly active "RWEs" and we have a recipe for suspending habeus corpus and next thing we know is that all us DHS-defined loonies are in "the camps".

I believe failing to see a bigger picture (there's that forest again!) in terms of what our insidiously warped government may potentially do with people who don't agree with them is detrimental to the cause of fighting for freedom. Back to the preformentioned radio/TV personality: Demonizing someone who is trying to relay important information, possibly even cryptically, is a waste of energy. Remove your binoculars for a moment and look at the forest.

Finally, the Blog author who motivated me to think and write last night and today stated that the US government has become an enemy to lovers of liberty. I agree. Those of us who are hoping to save liberty and freedom for the sake of future generations must see the bigger picture of what and who are working to completely undermine our society. One opinionated cable news personality and a three-minute video clip have nothing to do with the utter destruction of the "forest." They are just a couple of trees.
